LG G3: Is it worth it?

LG G3: Is it worth it?

LG G3 is LG’s flagship phone for 2014 and it has all the feautres you’d want in a smartphone. It has a QHD display (2560X1440) which is missing in even flagships like Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One. It has top notch hardware which includes Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 GPU, 3GB RAM and beefy 3000mAh battery. What is there not to like about it?

LG G3: Is it worth it?Should you upgrade from your old phone for the G3?

LG G3 is a powerhouse but it surely is not made for everyone, sadly. It has very less bezels around the edge but it still is a big phone. Having a screen size of 5.5″, we keep it in the phablet category. If you are a person who thinks iPhone is of perfect size, you’d better stick to it. LG G3 is not the phone for you. If you have a 2/3 year old phone like say Samsung Galaxy Note 1 or maybe HTC One X, you will be amazed to see what LG G3 has to offer to you. However, if you have a more recent phone like Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Samsung Galaxy S4 or the HTC One, you may want to wait… By no means am I saying that LG G3 is not worth the money. All I want to say is there is no margin happening in the G3. It has a bit better display, a little faster processor and a GB of RAM more but these are the things you can certainly live without. If you have a one year old device, trust me, it still has got some life left in it.

What is there to not like about LG G3?

Most of the people out there want to get the G3 because of its out of the ordinary QHD display with PPI over 500. I have seen the panel personally and yes, it is sharp, sharper than the 1080p panels we saw in the phones like HTC One M7 and Samsung Galaxy S4 but the colours and contrast weren’t as good. QHD Display in the LG G3 isn’t mature enough. It is the first batch of QHD display and the results aren’t that good. Also, very less QHD content is available in Android right now. I’d go ahead and say that HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5 have better displays than LG G3. More pixels also mean less than impressive performance. Although LG G3, Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z2 use the same processor, LG G3 performance isn’t on par with its competitors. What’s more, thanks to the QHD display, you can’t turn the brightness to maximum for a long time. The system will turn the brightness all the way down and won’t let the user increase the brightness. Why? The device cools down by lowering the brightness.

Why you will love the LG G3?

Enough with the downsides…. If you have made it till here, I’m pretty sure you love the LG G3 and it surely isn’t as bad as I have mentioned above. The things I have listed above are true but it is also something you can live with It’s nothing major. The performance may not be on par with HTC One M8 but only by a little margin. It’s not like LG G3 is all laggy. It has better performance than most of the smartphones of 2014. Also, once all major smartphone manufacturers come with QHD panels (which they surely will), no QHD content won’t be a problem anymore. And about that brighness thing, who sits with screen brighness set to maximum all the time?

LG G3: Is it worth it?Apart from all the technical things, LG G3 is one sexy phone. Slimmer bezels and premium look and feel makes this phone one of the best looking phones I hae touched. It may not feel as good as HTC One M8 but it sure feels better than Samsung Galaxy S5. The best thing about LG G3 has to be the bigger screen size in a compact body. HTC One M8 (5.1″), Samsung Galaxy S5 (5.1″) and LG G3 (5.5″) have similar dimensions.

The key features of LG G3 are as follows:

  • 5.5″ QHD Display
  • 2560X1440 resolution
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPU
  • 3GB RAM
  • 13MP Rear Facing camera capable of 4K Video Recording
  • Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)
  • 2MP Front Facing Camera
  • Beefy 3000 mAh Battery
  • 1.5 Watt Mono Speaker (Nothing special in here)
  • Android 4.4.4
  • 4G LTE

How is the camera of the LG G3 , then? It’s exceptional. It is a really good camera phone. Great at daylight and great at night. The OIS of the camera helps too. The color, saturation and contrast in the photos are great at day but suffurs from noise during night. The images are usable upto ISO 400. If you compare the image sample with Samsung Galaxy S5 (which has 16MP camera), images are better looking during day time in the S5 but night shots, LG G3 wins hands down.

The speaker of the LG G3 is average. Not too good but not bad either. It is comparable to that of Samsung Galaxy Note 2. We found that LG G2 has better speakers than G3. Battery life of LG is really good. Standby times are great too.

Conclusion: Should you buy it or Should you wait?

So, is LG G3 worth the money? It surely is, i.e. if you want a phone right now. Within months I can guarantee that there will be better phones with better displays and processor. Korean LG G3 already has Snapdragon 805 processor and it won’t be long before it will be available world wide. Another variant of Samsung Galaxy S5 too has QHD display and Snapdragon 805 Processor.

If you buy it now, you can rest assured that you have the most powerful phone on this planet. From screen to everything else, LG G3 has got it covered. You will love this phone if you plan to buy one. This phone is completely worth it. However, I suggest you to wait for a month or so to see what it’s competitors have to offer. Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime is rumored to be released sometime this month, so keep an eye for that too.
