Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is probably the best smartwatch you can buy today. And without any doubt, it is the best that is available here in Nepal. Samsung Mobile Nepal was kind enough to give us a review unit of the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier to the TechnoNepal team and hence here is our full review of the smartwatch.
I will start with an introduction of myself. I have a fitness/smartwatch maniac and I have tried more than a dozen smartwatches in the last few years. From the Apple Watch to the Xiaomi Mi Band 1,1s,2 to the Motorola Moto 360 Sport, I have tried them all. I am also using the Xiaomi Amazfit Fit as my daily driver as I am writing this review of the Samsung Gear S3. I should also mention that I used both the “fitness” part of this watch as well as the “smart” part of the watch equally.
There’s 2 variant of the Samsung Gear S3 namely the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier and the Samsung Gear S3 Classic. We are only reviewing the Frontier edition as the Classic edition will not be sold in Nepal.
First things first, the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is clearly meant for men. The smartwatch is chunky and has a rugged look. Also, the case size of the watch is 46mm which is quite large. If you are a man who likes big watches, the Gear S3 Frontier is certainly for you. If not, look elsewhere. The Gear S3 Classic would be a good choice for those with smaller hands but unfortunately, it won’t make its way into Nepal.
The design of the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier has to be the best feature of the smartwatch overall. The watch looks rugged and is beautifully crafted. When you hold the smartwatch, there’s no denying that it is a premium product. What I really love about it is the fact that it looks like a conventional smartwatch. I had 2 or 3 mistake it for a mechanical watch.
There are two buttons on the watch. One of them acts as a back button and the other acts as a home button. The rotating bezel on the phone is a great addition too. It makes navigating through the software very intuitive.
The display of the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is dead gorgeous. It’s also the best display I have ever seen in a smartwatch till date. The Gear S3 Frontier has a 1.3″ Circular Amoled display with 360×360 screen resolution. The other thing to like about the display is the fact that there’s no “flat tyre” like the one we see on the Motorola Moto 360.
The phone also inherits all the pros of an Amoled display including infinite black level and lower power consumption. In addition to that, the colors pop quite a lot and watching the dials turn is a pleasing experience.
The sunlight legibility is also excellent but not as good as that of the Huami Amazfit which has the best sunlight visibility of any device I have seen to date. It’s not to say that the sunlight visibility of the Gear S3 Frontier is bad. In fact, it is one of the better displays out there.
The Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is powered bt 1GHz dual core processor that is custom-built by Samsung. This SoC sips a lot less power compared to the Snapdragon counterpart that is used in most of the other Android smartwatches.
The performance of Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is really good. During my 1 week of testing, not did I even once face any lag or hiccups of any kind. The apps in the phone run smoothly and loads immediately. There’s also 768MB of RAM which helps quite a lot. There’s 4GB of internal storage too which can be used for storing media such as Music.
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier runs on Tizen platform which has both its pros and cons. We are so used to seeing Android Wear devices and using a Tizen powered device feels quite different. As the Frontier runs on Tizen, both the software and the hardware is controlled by Samsung and it’s a really good thing. Thanks to the software, the UI is really smooth and apps open up instantaneously. And talking of apps, there aren’t many. Apart from 1st party apps and the apps that are pre-installed, there are few things to be excited about.
However, most of the users will be more than happy with what comes pre-loaded. The smartwatch comes with fitness apps which can calculate the floors climbed, the altitude you are in, track steps and distance covered as well as measure the heart run continuously.
Other cool software features include the ability to reply text using the text recognition as well as interact with the phone either by using the bezels or by using the touch screen.
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier comes in both Wi-Fi and LTE variant but, in Nepal, we only get the Wi-Fi variant. It would be really cool if we got the LTE variant as it would work as the standalone phone.
The Gear S3 Frontier has to be one of the most connected smartwatch out there. The watch incorporates Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, Altimeter, Barometer, NFC and also has wireless charging chip inside.
Unfortunately, though, I had some issues with Bluetooth and at times, lost connection to the phone for no reason. When I tried pairing back, I just couldn’t establish the connection. Just in case you are curious, I was using the Xiaomi Mi5 to pair to the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier.
The Gear S3 Frontier is compatible with devices running Android 4.4 and above and also can be hooked up with iPhones running iOS 9 and above. The Gear S3 Frontier isn’t compatible with iPads.
The battery of Samsung Galaxy S3 Frontier is larger than most of its competitors. The smartwatch has a sealed 380mAh battery which lasted 2 days in my testing. Compared to the conventional smartwatches, you will be disappointed with the battery life of the Gear S3 Frontier. However, compare it with the smartwatches that we have today, I have to say the battery life is decent to good.
What’s really good about the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is the fact that it charges wirelessly. You can just place the watch on the wireless charger and you are good to go!
If you are looking to buy a new smartwatch and if you have got piles of cash lying around, go get the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. It’s the best smartwatch you can get today. It’s not perfect, though. The Tizen OS has apps lacking and the battery life could be better. If you can get over that, you will love the watch!
