Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI launched in Nepal for atrocious price!

As a previous Volkswagen Polo owner, I was very excited about the launch of the Polo 1.0 TSI model. The premium hatchback from Volkswagen is now officially available in Nepal and booking has started. However, you (and I) will be disappointed to know the price. The 2020 1.0 TSI Polo is priced at a whopping Rs. 47.45 lakh!

I am a big fan of VW group cars- be it Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, or Porsche. While the latter cars are simply unattainable in Nepal, the VW Polo was a product that an average Nepali could buy.

And if you were an enthusiast, you definitely always had your eyes n the Polo 1.2 GT TSI. With time, the company raised the price of the GT Polo so much that it cost more than most 4-meter compact SUVs. It too was reaching a price point where it would be difficult to swallow the asking price.

Recently, I saw a post from Volkswagen Nepal where they teased the new 1.0 Polo TSI. I was hoping it to be priced at around Rs. 3,500,000. But when I called the VW representative to ask the price, I was really surprised. The representative told me that the 1.0 TSI Polo which is a generation old car costs a massive Rs. 47.45 lakhs!

Surprisingly enough, the Skoda Rapid TSI which uses the same 1.0 VW engine is price starts at Rs. 34.90 lakhs! Not only are you getting the same engine but a much larger luxurious sedan. And in the process, you are saving yourself around Rs. 1,000,000.

The other thing that is disappointing about the new Polo is that¬†it isn’t new!¬†In fact, it is the same Polo that was introduced 11 years back. Apart from a few interior and exterior face-lifts, it is pretty much the same car. And the sad part is, most parts of the world already get a new generation Polo which is much larger, has better interior and exterior and comes with a host of capable engines.

If it were my money, I would look elsewhere. Paying Rs. 47.45 lakh for the 2020 Polo GT TSI 1.0L just doesn’t make sense.
